Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous national parks in Tanzania, and indeed in the world. Known for its vast savannah grasslands, it is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife in Africa. With an area of around 14,750 square kilometers, the park is located in the northern part of Tanzania, bordered by Kenya to the north and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the southeast. The park is home to the famous wildebeest migration which is a spectacle of nature that has to be seen to be believed. Getting There: The best way to get to Serengeti National Park is by flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located in Tanzania. From there, you can either take a domestic flight to one of the nearby airports such as Seronera or Grumeti or hire a private vehicle and driver to take you to the park. Things to See and Do: - Safari: The main attraction of the Serengeti is the wildlife and a safari is the best way to see it all. The park is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), as well as many other animals such as giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, hyenas and more. A guided safari will take you through the park and you will have the opportunity to see the animals up close. - Hot Air Balloon Safari: For a truly unique experience, consider taking a hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti. You will float over the savannah grasslands and see the animals from a bird's eye view. It is a magical experience and one that you won't forget. - Wildebeest Migration: One of the most spectacular events in the animal kingdom is the wildebeest migration. Every year, over a million wildebeest along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, make their way across the Serengeti in search of greener pastures. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. - Visit Maasai Villages: The Maasai people are a semi-nomadic tribe that have lived in the Serengeti for centuries. Visiting one of their villages will give you a glimpse into their traditional way of life. - Walks and Hikes: If you want to stretch your legs and get some exercise, there are several walking trails in the park that you can explore. You will need a guide to accompany you but it is a great way to get up close with the flora and fauna of the Serengeti. When to Visit: - Wildebeest Migration: The best time to witness the wildebeest migration is between July and September when the herds are crossing the Mara River. However the migration is a year-round event and there is always something to see in the Serengeti. - Dry Season: The dry season is from June to October, and this is a great time to see the animals, as they congregate around the water sources. The vegetation is also less dense during this time, making it easier to spot the animals. - Wet Season: The wet season is from November to May, and this is the time when the park is at its most beautiful, with lush green vegetation and plenty of flowers in bloom. However it can be more challenging to see the animals as they disperse over a larger area. Tips: - Choose Your Accommodation Carefully: There are several lodges and campsites in and around the Serengeti, ranging from basic to luxury. Make sure you choose accommodation that suits your needs and budget and that is located in a good spot for game viewing. - Bring Appropriate Clothing: The Serengeti can be hot during the day and cold at night, so bring clothing that will keep you comfortable in both extremes. It is also a good idea to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen as the sun can be intense. - Get a Good Guide: A good guide can make all the difference when it comes to spotting animals and understanding the park. Make sure you choose a guide who is experienced, knowledgeable and passionate about the Serengeti.
